Academy-Award Nominee Sally Kellerman Stars in Award-Winning Short JOAN’S DAY OUT

unnamed
In Hollywood, flame is but a fleeting thing. Not so for iconic actress, singer, and writer Sally Kellerman, who has been a force in Hollywood with a lengthy career spanning nearly 60 years! While she is most famous for her unforgettable turn as Major “Hot Lips” Houlihan in Robert Altman’s hit MASH…
mash-kellerman
it is her work with another Houlihan that is being spotlighted at the COMEDY NINJA Film Festival. Kellerman stars in director Ellen Houlihan’s hilarious award-winning short comedy JOAN’S DAY OUT.
Kellerman was born in Long Beach, California in 1937, and attended Hollywood High School. After graduation, she dropped out of Los Angeles City College to pursue acting lessons with Jeff Coreys, who taught the likes of Jack Nicholson, Shirley Knight, and James Coburn. After her debut film REFORM SCHOOL GIRL (1957), Kellerman was a great presence in the live theater scene, starring in stage productions of Henrik Ibsen’s AN ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE, Leslie Stevens’s THE MARRIAGE-GO-ROUND, and Michael Shurtleff’s CALL ME BY MY RIGHTFUL NAME.  During the 1960s, Kellerman landed roles in several television shows, including Dr. Elizabeth Dehner in STAR TREK (1966), and Judith Bellero in THE OUTER LIMITS opposite Martin Landau.
It wasn’t until the 1970s that Kellerman’s career really began to heat up, and it all started with her iconic role as Major Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan in Robert Altman’s Palme d’Or-winning comedy MASH. Kellerman was nominated for an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for her performance. After MASH, Kellerman continued to work with Altman and starred in several of his films, such as BREWSTER MCCLOUD, PRET-A-PORTER, and his short-lived television series, GUN. Outside of her work with Altman, Kellerman has delighted audiences for decades with her ability to portray a vast array of characters. She lit up the screen as Rodney Dangerfield’s English teacher-turned-love interest in BACK TO SCHOOL, and made audiences cry of laughter as a porn star in purgatory in MEATBALLS III: SUMMER JOB.
Aside from being an actress, Kellerman keeps busy off-screen by performing as a voice-over artist, promoting global brands such as Revlon and Mercedes-Benz. She also has an incredible singing career, has cut two albums, and has worked with music industry greats Lou Adler and Norman Granz. Kellerman often collaborates on her film’s soundtracks. Last year, Kellerman’s memoir about her trials and tribulations in the entertainment biz, READ MY LIPS: STORIES OF A HOLLYWOOD LIFE, was published.
You don’t want to miss seeing Kellerman’s awesome performance (and beautiful voice!) as a retirement home prisoner searching for freedom in JOAN’S DAY OUT. Ellen Houlihan’s hilarious breakout short was an official selection of the 2013 LA Shorts Fest and debuted at the Cannes Film Festival’s Cannes Court Metrage. JOAN’S DAY OUT will be featured at the COMEDY NINJA Film Festival on May 31st at 12:00pm, as part of the DIRTY GARDENING comedy shorts program.

ACADEMY AWARD-NOMINEE ROBERT FORSTER STARS IN COFFEE, KILL BOSS, COMEDY NINJA’S OPENING NIGHT FILM

Robert Forster in Jackie Brown
To honor director Nathan Marshall’s deft comedic whodunit COFFEE, KILL BOSS, which is opening the COMEDY NINJA Film Festival, we decided to take a look back at the phenomenal acting career of one of the film’s stars, Robert Forster. Today’s audience mainly knows Mr. Forster because of his Academy Award-nominated performance as Max Cherry in Quentin Tarantino’s excellent 1997 crime drama JACKIE BROWN. What they may not know is that this ultra-charismatic industry veteran has been acting in films and television since 1967!
Born in Rochester, New York in 1941, Forster showed interest and promise in theater at an early age. Although he went on to earn a Psychology degree during his stay at the University of Rochester in 1963, Forster continued to act in plays while he worked as a substitute teacher and construction worker. This was until a 20th Century-Fox agent offered him a 5 movie deal playing small parts alongside big-name actors such as Elizabeth Taylor and Marlon Brando. Forster starred in many films, such as THE STALKING MOON (1968), MEDIUM COOL (1969), and JUSTINE (1969), while simultaneously playing hardboiled detective Miles Banyon in the TV series BANYON (1971).
Throughout the 60′s and 70′s, Forster’s acting career really began to heat up. He notably appeared in THE BLACK HOLE (1979), played the lead in ALLIGATOR (1980), and landed another leading role as a taxi driver in WALKING THE EDGE (1983). However, after a series of action flicks, such as THE DELTA FORCE (1986) with Chuck Norris, Forster found it harder to find work and was frequently cast in small parts. During this decline, he found work as a motivational speaker and acting coach.
Quentin Tarantino, a fan of Forster’s earlier work, helped revive his career by offering him a role in his movie, JACKIE BROWN. Forster was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his outstanding portrayal of tough yet sympathetic bail bondsman Max Cherry. His performance in JACKIE BROWN led to more high-profile work in films such as Gus Van Sant’s PSYCHO (1998) and SUPERNOVA (2000).
So don’t you dare miss Robert Forster’s excellent performance as corporate honcho Walt Ford in the L.A. premiere of COFFEE, KILL BOSS. The hilarious, chock-full-of-surprises film, which also stars Eddie Jemison and Noureen DeWulf, was just awarded Best Feature Film honors at The 2014 Maryland International Film Festival. COFFEE, KILL BOSS will unspool at the COMEDY NINJA Film Festival on Friday, May 30th at 7:00pm, with many members of the cast and crew in attendance. COMEDY NINJA’s Opening Night Party starts right afterwards, so we hope to see you there!

Opening its doors in 1979, the World Famous Laugh Factory has been recognized as “the #1 comedy club in the country” by such high-profile media as USA Today. With southern California locations in Hollywood (its original Sunset Boulevard locale) and Long Beach (opened in 2008), comedy’s top stars, as well as today’s brightest emerging talent, shine on its legendary stage.

Founder Jamie Masada, the driving force behind the Laugh Factory, is revered as a pioneer and innovator and is an iconic name on the comedy scene. He was and continues to be instrumental in launching the careers of many of today’s biggest comics. The New York Daily News called him the “Real King of Comedy.” His knowledge and expertise have made him the leading authority on all things comedy and his advice is highly regarded by the entertainment industry’s top power brokers.

Among the comedians who have performed at the club are Tim Allen, Louie Anderson, Roseanne Barr, Milton Berle, David Brenner, Nick Cannon, Drew Carey, George Carlin, Jim Carrey, Dave Chappelle, Dane Cook, Rodney Dangerfield, Ellen DeGeneres, Phyliss Diller, Jeff Dunham, Jeff Foxworthy, Redd Foxx, Brad Garrett, Eddie Griffin, Kathy Griffin, Buddy Hackett, Bob Hope, Andy Kaufman, Sam Kinison, Martin Lawrence, Jay Leno, David Letterman, Richard Lewis, Goerge Lopez, Bernie Mac, Bill Maher, Howie Mandel, Carlos Mencia, Larry Miller, Mo’Nique, Paul Mooney, Eddie Murphy, Kevin Pollack, Richard Pryor, Paul_Reiser, Chris Rock, Paul Rodriguez, Ray Romano, Bob Saget, Mort Sahl, Adam Sandler, Jerry Seinfeld, Garry Shandling, Sarah Silverman, Jon Stewart, Wanda Sykes, Chris Tucker, Damon Wayans, Keenan Ivory Wayans, Flip Wilson, Robin Williams, Jonathan Winters, Steven Wright, Henry Youngman and many, many more.
In 2006, the Laugh Factory made headlines when Michael Richards launched into an unfortunate racist outburst toward two African American men heckling him during a routine. In response, the club banned comedians from using the “n-word” in their acts. Less than a month later, the first incident under the new rule occurred with Damon Wayans dropping the word 16 times in a 20 minute set. He was fined $320 ($20 for each offense) and banned from performing at the venue for three months.
A former stand up himself, Masada is a sought-after consultant and successful producer of comedy franchises for both film and television. He served as a producer for Damon Wayan’s film, Behind the Smile, which was shot on location at the Laugh Factory’s Hollywood location, and Disney’s RocketMan. Currently in development are the feature films Blackxican, in association with Paul Rodriguez and Paul Mooney, and with Dom Irrera, Goombas of Comedy.
Masada created and is the executive producer of Supreme Court of Comedy, a half-hour, unscripted series he developed which is currently entering its fourth season on DirecTV. Filmed at the Hollywood Club, real-life complaints are heard before comedian and “Chief Justice” Dom Irrera, who hands out hilarious (and surprisingly just) rulings. Guest starring as “Court Counselors” is a who’s who of today’s top comics.
L’Chaim Hollywood, which debuted on The Jewish Channel (TJC) in September 2010, is a comedy series showcasing Judaism’s top talent with comedy, music, and talk. Currently in development is Laugh Factory Open Mic for DirecTV and GI Comedy Throwdown, a contemporary take on the traditional USO Comedy Specials.
Masada was also a casting consultant for Fox’s In Living Color, a ground-breaking and sometimes controversial series which showcased African American humor, music, and culture. Masada was instrumental in championing the casting of both Jim Carrey (one of the few white cast members) and Jamie Foxx, not only helping to ensure the success of the show, but fast-tracking the two aspiring, young comedians’ careers.

THE LAUGH FACTORY JOINS THE COMEDY NINJA FAMILY!

comedyninjaxlaughfactory
